I may have pre-ordered a blu-ray box set despite not owning a blu-ray player (or a TV). In looking for an external drive to use with my desktop, I have found it to be pricey and apparently a pain in the ass.

It has come to my attention that apparently a playstation 3 works as a blue-ray player and is cheaper than a name-brand external drive that still needs purchased software to work. Is this true? If so, I guess I’m in the market for one, and will hook it up to one of my monitors .

(For audio I’ll get a thing to go in-line with the HDMI connection and pull out RCA connections to go to my computer stereo. )

Most consoles carry Blu-ray capabilities . When my folks were shopping for a blu-ray player, they ended up buying a PS3 instead.

PS3, PS4, and Xbox One can all play Blu Rays.

On PC, in terms of software I believe VLC can still play blu ray movies.

For the PS3 and PS4, I think the only limitation is that it can’t play 4k blu ray.

You should buy a 4k tv

There are many things I’d rather have over a big TV that I’d never watch . My black friday list starts with “a dishwasher which doesn’t require a block of wood to hold the upper rack in place” with “roomba” in a close second place. A new stereo cabinet is somewhere on there as well, far before “big tv”

If you go the desktop route give thought a BD writer and not just a BD reader. Even then you should be able to find something like one of the better Asus used on ebay for under $50. Software is not a problem if you aren’t using this in your full blown media room with theater seating etc.

A good BD player with built in DAC chip and good power isolation is the better choice.  Clearly you won’t find a like new OPPO for small money.  There are tons of good used 1080 capable players for less than you would think since everyone HAD to upgrade.
